THE RATING

THE LAIR EXPERTS

Matt: Based on the trailers, this movie had the potential to be the best 'Halloween' film of them all. Michael on another rampage. The town of Haddonfield on edge. The final battle between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers. Everything was set up for a classic. Then the film dropped. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. Did we get the final battle between Laurie and Michael? Yes, but an abbreviated 15 minute version at the very end of the film. It was the rest of the film that came before it that sunk the franchise to a new low. The producers pulled the old bait and switch tactic and delivered a film totally different than what was promised in the trailer. Copycat killer Corey Cunningham? Come on. I had to ask my wife several times in the first hour of the film if we were even in the right theater. This was the worst film in the franchise by far, and it's not even close. Some people say they were mimicking 'Halloween III' and I get that, but the main difference was, at least with that film, Michael Myers wasn't promised in the trailer with a whole different film then released. Corey was just plain terrible in this film, and couldn't carry the lead role. The other new characters were pretty bland, and the returning characters could only do so much with what they were given. James Jude Courtney, who should have been celebrated as the first actor to officially portray Michael Myers a third time, was instead a victim in his own right, lost in the shuffle of bad, lazy writing. The Shape character was at its weakest in this film, doing uncharacteristic things and being killed off at his lowest point. I would have much rather seen him at his best, with Laurie conquering Michael at his peak. In addition to that, John Carpenter's score, which was so great in the first two films, is virtually nonexistent in this one, but that too may have been by design. I can honestly say I've never walked out of the theater after a 'Halloween' film pissed off...until now. This is the only film out of all my ratings in the franchise to "earn" a 1, and even that is only because of the frantic last 15 minutes. Personally, I feel it would've been better if they tacked on the last 15 minutes to 'Halloween Kills' and ended it with two films. It would have saved the fans a whole hell of a lot of disappointment. 1 out of 10.
