THE LAIR EXPERTS

Matt: 'Vengeance' has to be the most hyped fan film I've ever seen to date. Billed as an unofficial sequel to 'Jason Lives' and featuring the returns of C.J. Graham and Steve Dash, I had high hopes for this one. But as the movie went along, my hopes were dashed, no pun intended. Aside from the main cast, the acting was awful. At times, it felt like I was watching a 'Saturday Night Live' comedy skit. The amount of gratuitous violence and kills were very un-F13 like, and most of the kills were set in broad daylight and not even scary. There were way too many characters to keep track of, and some just seemed like they were there to up the body count or show their "goods". The producers also missed a golden opportunity for another nod to 'Jason Lives'-- by using Alice Cooper's song "Vengeance Is Mine". This would have really brought it full circle, in my opinion. Alice, of course, performed three songs for 'Jason Lives' in 1986. The metal music they did use really took away from the feel of the film, and thank god Harry Manfredini's awesome score was there, because it was so desperately needed at times to remind me that this was even a 'Friday The 13th' film. On the positive side, the returning actors were fantastic in their new roles, and the tributes and nods to the other 'F13' films were excellent. Production designer Mick Strawn really brought this film some credibility with his work. In the end, this film was highly ambitious, but fell short on so many levels. 'More Than A Fan Film'? Nah, that's just what it is. 5 out of 10.
